We believe subsea has a critical role to play in delivering a sustainable energy future for the world, lowering emission in the oil and gas industry, while helping to accelerate the transition to new energy systems.
Subsea technologies can help deliver the sustainable energy future that the world needs.
In critical high-pressure environments such as the deep subsea, integrity and partnership are vital. We value transparency and believe in doing the right thing, taking great care to safeguard the trust others put in us. This is the foundation upon which we deliver seamless solutions from pore to shore and everything in between.
This new partnership creates the world’s leading global subsea technology and solutions provider. One that’s innovating to drive the new subsea era, that will better unlock access to the energy the world needs.
A new subsea era is needed now. Our parent companies brought us together to better drive it, so that customers can unlock the full potential of subsea faster. With efficiencies and optimizations. With innovation, creative technologies, and digital solutions. To help the world access the offshore energy it needs, more efficiently.
Our subsea solutions are designed to withstand the harsh conditions experienced on the seabed. We pioneered collecting subsea operational data in realtime, and our reliability record proves it. And we will continue innovating to expand our portfolio and push the frontiers of subsea.
We believe that subsea can and should play a significant role in delivering energy security in the short and long term while operating more efficiently.
We must lower emissions associated with traditional energy systems and accelerate building new ones. Optimize operations and eliminate flaring. Electrify offshore assets using subsea solutions. Reduce the footprint of offshore facilities. Use the seabed to facilitate CCS. The possibilities for subsea are endless.
Our history dates back all the way to the mid-1800s. Since their respective foundings, our parent companies have worked at the forefront of engineering and innovation, over time developing iconic engineering solutions, electrifying operations, and implementing digital innovations to increase efficiency and safety and drive new possibilities in production.
Akers Mekaniske Verksted was founded on the Aker River in Oslo, Norway.
In 1920, the Schlumberger brothers opened their first office at 30 rue Fabert in Paris. In 1922, Cameron began when John Smither Abercrombie and Harry Cameron developed the first successful blowout preventer for oil wells.
SLB’s growing expertise in deepsea drilling helped illuminate the ocean floor for scientific explorers. In 1961, Cameron designed and built the first subsea tree for use in 55-ft water depth in the Gulf of Mexico. When oil and gas was discovered in the North Sea, Aker Solutions began converting offshore rigs, and in 1969, Ocean Viking was used to discover Norway’s first oil field.
Aker Solutions continued to develop safer and highly reliable technology for the development and operation of deepwater fields and difficult reservoirs. The company became a driving force in the development of subsea fields, floating production concepts, horizontal wells, and increased oil recovery.
Framo Engineering was established in 1983 with 13 employees.
The 1990s saw a series of industry-leading innovations for SLB around the world, including the world’s first subsea multiphase pump and meter, electric booster pump, separation pumping system, and electric multiphase pump.
In 2000, SLB bought a 40% stake in Framo Engineering, three years after establishing the Three Phase Center of Excellence joint venture to develop metering innovations together. SLB increased that stake to 52.75% in 2007. With a legacy that traces back more than 25 years, Subsea7 was created as a joint venture in 2002.
In 2013, Cameron and SLB formed OneSubsea to target subsea oil production and recovery. In 2015, OneSubsea and Helix Energy Solutions Group formed the Subsea Services Alliance to optimize the value chain of subsea well intervention systems, and Subsea7 and OneSubsea formed Subsea Integration Alliance.
Aker Solutions delivered the world’s first subsea gas compression system for Norwegian state-controlled energy company Equinor (formerly known as Statoil). The system, nearly the size of a football field, revolutionized offshore natural gas production by cutting costs and improving safety.
SLB achieved the deepest pump installation at 9,500 ft and the same year, the company installed the longest tieback for a subsea pump, 30 km.
In 2022, SLB, Aker Solutions, and Subsea7 announced the new OneSubsea joint venture.
We believe subsea has a critical role to play in delivering a sustainable energy future for the world, lowering emission in the oil and gas industry, while helping to accelerate the transition to new energy systems.
